I've put away my open toed heels, summer dresses and coral coloured nailpolish. Winter has well and truly arrived to the East-Coast
I have fond memories of all my summers, from months spent reading novel after novel in Vernon, BC to setting up shop in Montreal, each summer has brought a little adventure. Some, such as driving across Canada with my parents and four sisters, were a little more stressful than others.
The linking factor between all of these experiences is booze. That's not a glamourous statement, but it's true.
Summer and a cold drink just belong together together. When I worked on an archaeological dig in Panama for the summer we would meet at the local bar to relax after a day of digging holes in 45 degree heat. Choices included beer with ice cubes (sacrilegious but necessary) or indulging in the local liquor- Seco, that the locals drink with milk- but that will knock you off your feet however you take it.
In Montreal, friends would convene after a day of wrestling with cleaning pools, walking gangs of dogs, and the heat. And there was always enough cheap wine to make poutine necessary.
However, without a doubt my most memorable summer cocktail, is something I've dubbed the Kitchen Party.
The summer after my second year of university Kitchen St. was the place to be on Saturday nights. I'm pretty sure we were there every single week. It was this tiny little place, rented by a couple of our friends, and each weekend it was host to the best kind of party: the East Coast Kitchen party.
This little cocktail was my drink of choice that summer, and I'm pretty sure I made every person at the house try it at least once. Several of my friends have since asked me for the recipe, so here it is!
It's the perfect summer drink, so mix it up and sit back and picture yourself seven months from now!
Cheers.
